Salazar, who plays forward, is one of 11 athletes chosen for the trip out of a large group of highly skilled players. Salazar was approached by his FC Dallas coach and encouraged to try out for the team. After two rounds of intense try-outs Jared’s family received the good news.
“We were a little surprised, but so excited when we found out Jared had been chosen,” said Salazar’s mother, Jennifer Valenzuela. “There is just so much talent out there and the competition is so tough.”
While the news of his selection may have come as a surprise to Salazar and his family, J.W. Long PE teacher and Terrell High School Assistant Basketball and Track coach, Cornelius Price has recognized Salazar’s talent for years.
“Ever since Jared arrived here at JW Long in 2014, we all knew he was going to be a special athlete,” Price shared. His work ethic has always been second to none as well as his attitude. He loves competition and exhibits great sportsmanship regardless if his team wins or loses.”
Upon arriving in Spain, FC Dallas will face off against Real Madrid in their first match, something Salazar has been anxiously anticipating.
“I am most excited to get to compete against some of the best teams in the world, like Real Madrid and Barcelona,” Salazar said.
J.W. Long staff members have come together in support and celebration of Salazar’s tremendous honor by helping raise the needed finances for the trip. From the entire Terrell Proud, Tiger Strong community, best of luck to Jared as he travels to compete in Spain.
