This year, Toys for Tots has registered nearly 3,000 children from Terrell in need of Christmas gifts. Applications poured in from families who struggle to provide toys and gifts for their children. The Toys for Tots program aims to fulfill each and every application to ensure all children have a gift under the tree on Christmas morning.
The Toys for Tots program for the Terrell area, led by Marine Corps League of Terrell, invites community members to unite for a common cause, and to play an active role in the development of one of our nation’s most valuable resources – our children. What may seem like a simple toy, may make all the difference for a child to experience the joy of Christmas this year.
Jerry Persall, a member of the Marine Corps League of Terrell shared one particular story that left a lasting impact on his group and reminded them of what makes the Toys for Tots program so important.
“One year, there was one family that had no heat, very little food, and there were no toys under the tree. In addition to bringing them toys, a few of us got together to purchase heaters for the home and collect food items from our local Share Center. That family really stuck with us,” Persall said.
“Most people see the Marine Corps as warriors, but they have compassion for others - especially when it comes to kids. We want to make sure as many families are helped at Christmas as possible. It is demanding, but very rewarding,” Persall adds.
Donations are being accepted until Wednesday, December 16. Collection boxes are located around the Terrell community including all TISD schools and the TISD Administration Building (700 N. Catherine St.). The greatest need is for toys suited for children eight to 12 years of age. All donated toys must be new and unwrapped.
Thank you for helping make this a Merry Christmas for all our children!
