“I grew up in the heart of District 3 and am grateful that the voters entrusted me to be an advocate for them,” Derrick said. “I am excited about the opportunity to give back to the community that helped to shape me, and I look forward to collaborating with other members of the board and Dr. Warnock to create a clear vision and measurable goals that help to make our school district stand out among the rest.”
Derrick, who is 1985 graduate of Terrell High School, has family history in Terrell that dates back to the 1800’s. Her great-great-great-grandparents purchased several acres of land in the East Bachelor community, which now sits behind the Tanger Outlets. Her family also built the Mt. Hebron Baptist Church. Her mother Vallie Derrick, a 1958 graduate of Burnett High School, placed a high priority on the education of her six children. During her tenure as a Terrell ISD student Derrick was an active student. She served on student council and was member of the cheerleading squad. She continued her service to her community members after high school by serving on the Riter C. Hulsey Public Library board, volunteering in TISD schools, mentoring students, and serving with the Association of Breezy Hill Park.
“We are excited to welcome Ms. Derrick as our newest TISD School Board Trustee,” shared Dena Risinger, TISD School Board President. “Ms. Derrick and her family are well-respected longtime members of the Terrell community, and we are confident she will serve our students, teachers, and schools with excellence. Our team is thrilled to have her on board.”
Derrick will officially be sworn into her position at the next Terrell ISD School Board meeting on Monday, May 17 at the Jamie Foxx Performing Arts Center. She will take the torch from Lisa Asher, a devoted member of Terrell ISD School Board of Trustees and the current School Board Vice President. Asher has served on the Board of Trustees for 15 years and did not seek reelection.
“We are thankful for the dedicated service that Ms. Lisa Asher provided to the children of Terrell ISD as a long-standing board member,” said Dr. Georgeanne Warnock, Superintendent of Schools. “Ms. Asher should be incredibly proud of her work as a School Board Trustee.”
Congratulations and welcome to the Tiger Team, Ms. Derrick.
