“I was really surprised to learn that I was selected,” Ruben said. “I’m excited about the opportunity to visit our nation’s Capitol. I want to learn more about the history of our country, and I think it will also be interesting to meet the other students who are going on the trip.”
During the six-day excursion, students will experience what they’ve learned about our U.S. government in our nation’s Capitol with students from all over the United States. Students will visit the Jefferson Memorial, FDR Memorial, MLK Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, and much more. They will also get the opportunity to meet with members of Congress and observe Congressional Committee hearings.
Terrell High School Principal Dr. Juan Solis describes Ruben as a hardworking, respectful student who always takes care of his business. Dr. Solis also explained that much like himself, Ruben comes from an immigrant background, and has a thirst for knowledge when it comes to understanding the fundamentals of how our Capitol and our country were built.
“Ruben really loves history, so he was overwhelmed when he found out he was selected,” Dr. Solis said. “During the trip, I want him to take in the beauty of our country and our Capitol. When he returns to school, I think he will have an upper hand in fully understanding our government. He will have seen and learned about the things his teacher is talking about in class.”
In addition to excelling academically, Ruben also serves as the striker on the THS varsity soccer team. Ruben plans to one day become a marine welder.
