Wood, a Terrell Native, spent 33 years as a Terrell ISD school bus driver, teacher, administrator, and Superintendent, before retiring in 1997. He also served as Kaufman Independent School District Superintendent for seven years and retired a second time in 2006. Wood received his Bachelor of Science, Master of Education, and Doctor of Education from East Texas State University, now Texas A&M University-Commerce. In addition to his time in Kaufman Country school districts, Wood served as an adjunct professor for the University of North Texas, Dallas Baptist University, and Texas A&M University-Commerce. Most recently, Wood spent 8 years serving as Kaufman County Judge from 2011 to 2018.
“Dr. Wood is not only well versed in the superintendent role, he is also a longtime and faithful supporter of our students, teachers, and community.” said Dena Risinger, Terrell ISD School Board President. “We are excited to welcome Dr. Wood back to Terrell ISD; we believe his leadership and expertise will be a valuable asset to the District during this season of transition. I have full confidence in our team and I firmly believe there are many great and exciting days ahead of us.”
Wood will join the TISD leadership team alongside Deputy Superintendent Dr. Jason Gomez, and Assistant Superintendent Dr. Larry Polk. Current Terrell ISD Superintendent Micheal French, who voluntarily submitted his resignation on Monday, August 5, will be reassigned to the role of Transitional Coordinator and will act as a consultant to aide a smooth transition.
“I commend Mr. French and his leadership team for the tremendous growth and success seen across the District the past 6 years,” shared Wood. “I am thrilled and honored by the opportunity to join an incredible team of educators and leaders, and I look forward to serving the District as we continue to strive forward and increase student achievement.”
Wood will assume his new role on Friday, August 16 and will serve until the Board of Trustees names a new superintendent. The Board plans to begin their search for a permanent replacement after the start of the school year.
